That tutorial is only relevant for really old bbPress standalone setups that people might want to integrate into their existing bbPress setups.

It’s similar to how Twitter’s favorite functionality works, but not as extensive with how you can display the favorited data.
Grabbing most favorites over a specific time period would require a bit of coding. Could be accomplished with a transient perhaps.
